A New Zealand Ocarina crafted at Arts Unique using Nelson clay, because our ocarinas have been made & played now in New Zealand for over 30 years, they have developed a strong NZ personality, with the carving & sound incorporating a lot of pacific design & music capabilities.
The ocarina originates from Peru & was used as a hunting tool by the native tribes & later by the Incas. It's primitive whistle was tuned to mimic the mating call of birds. It wasn't too long before the hunter realised the ocarina could also be used for entertainment & added a spiritual voice to ceremonies. We use a western scale that allows the instrument to play a wide range of musical styles from blues, classical jazz, folk, tribal etc., but still allows for the primitive nature sounds, music of the birds & the wind. It comes with an ocarina sheet, which includes a fingering chart, easy songs to play & some facts. This instrument is approx.100mm in length.
