THE FACTS ABOUT THE OCARINA
- the word ocarina means little bird or little goose
- the ocarina is a vessel flute and is one of the simplest wind
instruments to learn to play
- Because it is made from clay this allows the instrument to be
played in water for example. Whilst in a hot bath, this also allows
water to be placed inside the flute in a small quantity and when
the instrument is played moving it slightly back and forth displacing
the water and inner air space, a beautiful warbling or birdlike
sound is created. Dry your ocarina after this though as a dry
ocarina is a happy ocarina.
- it is classed as a sculptural instrument, part art part instrument,
and looks good whether it’s being played or sitting somewhere
waiting to be played
- we now produce between 400-500 ocarinas a year
- each year between 15-20 new designs are created
- each ocarina is signed by the artist and has the year it was
created engraved into it
- Early ocarinas made by arts unique are now becoming collectable
with prices for early instruments holding and appreciating. We
have produced a CD, called Windsongs of the Ocarina by Francis
Maxino a genius musician-composer which shows the enormous potential
of the instrument and covers many musical styles.
- each ocarina is part of a limited edition as we make between
35 to 50 of each design
- the ocarina is perfect for blues or jazz etc. as the notes can
be easily bent by moving your finger across the sound hole while
blowing
- all of the sharps and flats are created by just covering part
of the sound hole with your finger and blowing slightly harder
or softer the skills of many people have gone into the creation
of our ocarina
